Aurora australis et aurora borealis (northern lights) vues depuis la station spatiale internationale (ISS). Hines shared a collection of four photos. This time around, he's already managed to catch the aurora on more than one occasion, and given how much he's enjoyed the sightings, he'd be hoping that there would be more in the coming days. Check out this amazing footage of the Northern Lights as seen from the International Space Station. NASA astronaut Bob Hines took to Twitter to share photographs taken of Earth from the International Space Station (ISS) on Wednesday, August 17th. During his first stint on-board the ISS, he had also shared an image of the Southern Lights, but that was apparently his only sighting of the stunning phenomenon during the six months he was in the space station that time. This is Pesquet's second stint on the International Space Station, having already spent six months in space back in 2016. Oxygen gives off green and red light, while nitrogen glows blue and purple. There, the particles react with gases in the Earth's atmosphere, resulting in the auroras and the beautiful displays of light in the sky. ![]() When that solar energy and the negatively-charged space dust reach planet Earth, it is funneled by Earth's magnetic field lines at the north and south poles. During solar storms, or coronal mass ejection, the Sun releases large amounts of energetic particles that travel through space at high speeds. The auroras are best seen at night, but they are actually caused by the Sun. At the time this photo was taken, the space station was orbiting about 258 miles. The light show is typically a greenish color that can appear in a variety of shapes caused by collisions between fast-moving. A lime-green aurora glows above Earths city lights in this view from the International Space Station. He had earlier shared a bunch of other images of the Southern Lights on Instagram, showing off the stunning natural phenomenon is all its glory. The northern lights were named after the Roman goddess for dawn. ![]() Another image shared by Pesquet earlier in the week also showed off the stunning Aurora Australis in red, green, and blue. The blue ocean below, the backdrop of the sparkling white clouds, and the orange glow of the earth's atmosphere make the whole video even more magical. Shared on Twitter by French astronaut Thomas Pesquet, the latest video of the Southern Lights is a sight to behold. As for the auroras, they are caused by energetic particles from the Sun that are released during solar storms and are also known as Aurora Polaris because they are visible near the poles. ![]()
